"Architecture or
Revolution...Revolution can be avoided..."
Le Corbusier
I always liked
that quote, especially when I was in school...
Over the past several
years, I had gotten away from the thinking behind
that quote given the
demanding aspects of executing complex,
process-driven engineering
projects.
However, I have come to the conclusion that I need to get back
to the
basic idea...the demand for Architecture...and designs that
respond to the
demand...originate with the Architect...
I guess
I need a good engineering quote now...
Defining Architecture...
Making Order out of
Chaos...
The undifferentiated world does not suit our purposes...We
create
structures to give purpose to space...the differentiation can
result in most
anything...a cathedral, or a bicycle shed...If they are
done nicely, I have
no problem with either, Mr. Pevsner
aside....
Within these spaces, we work to achieve our goals, however
mundane or
glorious they may be...
Order is the proper response
to a need, Mr. Kahn aside...
There's
probably room for some other good quotes here also...
I enjoy
the engineering methodology that is used for complex projects...
I. K.
Brunel- I had a
great conversation the other day with
Tom Bathgate of PWI Engineering
(www.pwius.com) about architecture
and
engineering and he introduced me to Isambard Kingdom
Brunel...
This will give me
something to do in my spare time...
Design Dreams...I have always wanted to design a
bridge and a
skyscraper...
The bridge makes me think of Beaux
Arts design a la Wagner...
and Philadelphia's past ties to the Beaux Arts
design style...
The skyscraper?... there is a great challenge in trying
to throw a building
up at a significant height...at least I think
so...I've always had this one idea
for a design that I just haven't
managed to get onto paper yet...I'll keep
trying...not for any real
reason...just to keep trying...

Process Architecture...I have often been asked if I
consider myself a
"Process Architect"...and I have struggled to explain
that as an architect I
consider designing to accommodate Process a
basic requirement for
complex project types...blah, blah, blah....and
so on...
Looking back, what I meant to say, is...
"Yes, I consider
myself a Process Architect...
I also consider myself an Execution/ Production
Architect...
I am also a Project Engineer...
I manage Project
teams...
I am a Civil/ Structural Engineer...
and I do Proposal
Work...
and Sales...
and Marketing...
and...
If you want to hire
me as a Process Architect, that's OK with me..."
